The Bodhichitra School of Thangka Painting is the only Thangka
studio in Bodhgaya, the most Sacred Buddhist site, and has four
principle objectives:
1) To provide skills and employment opportunities to Indian
youth
2) To provide these young artists with the philosophical and
ethcal skills to effect positive change in their communities
3) To bring home to North India, the ancient Buddhist state of
Magadh, the art form that originated here but has since been lost
4) To preserve the Karma Gadri tradition of Thangka painting for
future generations
The School offers a comprehensive 4 year program to students
giving them a firm foundation in the skills required for the Karma
Gadri School that is rooted in Dharma theory and practice and
includes, Traditional Iconography, composition and technical
painting skills.
Shashikant Kumar is the school's
principal and
painting master. A
native of the
Bodhgaya area and
a FWBO
Dhammamitra,
Shashi is the son of a sculptor whose work can be
found within the grounds of the Mahabodhi Temple.
He completed the six-year thangka training program of
Tsering Art School, Shechen Monastery, located in the
neighborhood of Kathmandu's Boudanath stupa.
Following graduation he established a studio in the
Boudanath area where he began training Indian and
Nepali students. He travels regularly in Europe giving
thangka workshops to European artists.
